He is a serious man, but willing to laugh with his teammates. An upright human being who is not interested in measuring words if his honesty is on trial. Miguel Ángel Sosa Vargas, also known as “Micky”, oversees all the Facility Services Division projects in Puerto Rico. “I get up every day at 4:40 in the morning and I am always very aware of those my boys who check in to the projects very early in the morning for whatever needs they have …” The communication that Miguel achieves with his boys, as he calls his employees, goes beyond one or two instructions. “From the morning it is about balancing and solving problems for my boys then it’s about accomplishing the little things that I have left from the day before. That is basically how the day goes, from the time you get up until you go to bed, always checking on the boys until they get home. It doesn’t matter. If they call me at any time, they know that wherever they are, I’ll arrive. For me, they are the most important thing. For sure one of the most important things. I am a facilitator for them. Where they need me, there I will be. I can have a thousand defects, but that’s not one. I’m real”.

Miguel

He came to the family business, from which the leadership of GENCO rose, in 1995. He started out as a part-time mechanic working with tractors until he became one of our first employees. He took the opportunity to develop his management skills. But his willingness to work hard became the reason why today he is a key player to GENCO’s success. He achieved this, without losing the essence and remembering his past. “I consider that I am still the same” – referring to his beginnings as an employee and his path towards becoming a leader – “just me and the experiences of so many years, but that has not changed me, I believe that I remain the same.” 

There is something very important that Miguel learned in the beginning of his career, that he always tries to teach his boys – “Discipline. I believe that the discipline acquired throughout the years”. He says that the one who taught him discipline, and had a lot of patience with him, was Abuelo Víctor (Grandpa Victor), as many affectionately call the man who was his leader for many years. “There was no better man to teach me about discipline than him. He woke up early, we did everything early… if there is no discipline, nothing is going to work – and that’s the same thing I have instilled in my boys”.

Family and work

“For me, my life is my children and my family, and right after that goes my job. GENCO is my life. My children and my family were born here, and I am part of GENCO… I am in a family… I take care of it as if it were mine because my family subsists from it”. There are many stories that demonstrate Miguel’s commitment to GENCO and his team. A recent one occurred at the beginning of the pandemic, when it wasn’t mandatory yet to wear masks, but Puerto Rico started to face a great shortage of personal protective equipment. Faced with the need to know his boys were protected, Miguel found immediate solutions. With the most strategic planning possible, Miguel opened each box of gloves and divided it into small packages for each one of his employees, ensuring that none of them missed the opportunity to be protected. In the same way, his mother served as an ally, sewing masks for his entire team, when cloth masks were not yet a trend. They were innovative in times of need.

Miguel also remembers his very own moments of need. Very tough moments on a personal level in which he has needed his GENCO family around and found that support. “I left everything and went to deal with my priority” – referring to a very tough moment for him and his family – “those people (his family from GENCO) were with me from day one. They were in solidarity with me. That is something that I will never forget”.

“GENCO is a company of its word”, this is something that Miguel says he would tell our client “a company with the type of personnel in which they can trust to provide the service. I would tell them that they will not regret having hired us because we are a company of our word. That’s what I have done for 26 years. I would let them know that the offer that took place sitting in a chair (in negotiation) is what they’ll get”.

Pride, honor and integrity

“One has to be proud of what one does and what one offers… one has to do everything that has to be done by the law. That is essential … in the long run, your satisfaction will be that the customer buys who you are. That cannot be lost. The word that one gives, is pledged and one has to face it”.

What would you tell your future employees? “I don’t have to say much… I have always told my boys about where I come from. The person who I was at one point. There are many men and women with a lot of potential. They are in positions where, perhaps, a talent is being lost. Because there is a lot of new talent. But if you are disciplined and wait, your time will come. It will come because that’s the way life is. It doesn’t matter where you are, when you shine – you shine. There is no way that you don’t shine. And GENCO gives that opportunity. And throughout these 26 years that I have been here, I have taken care of that. To always tell them that everyone has the right to progress. That everyone has the right to be a better human being and that their moment will come. I think that there is no better example than me. I am a testament that you can. The opportunities were given, and I took advantage of them and here I am”.

Somos GENCO: Miguel Sosa, Operaciones

Un hombre serio, pero dispuesto a reír con sus compañeros. Un ser humano íntegro que no le interesa medir palabras si se pone en juicio su honestidad. Miguel Ángel Sosa Vargas, también conocido como “Micky”, está a cargo de Supervisar todos los proyectos de la División de Servicio a Facilidades en Puerto Rico. “Yo me levanto todos los días a las 4:40 de la mañana y estoy siempre bien pendiente a los muchachos que entran a veces bien temprano en los proyectos y a cualquier necesidad que ellos tengan…” La comunicación que Miguel logra con sus muchachos, como le llama a sus empleados, va más allá de dar o recibir instrucciones. “Desde por la mañana es cuadrando y resolviéndole problemas a mis muchachos y las cositas que se me hayan quedado del día antes, tratarlas de cumplir. Eso es mayormente un día, desde que se levanta uno hasta que se acuesta, siempre pendiente a los muchachos hasta que ellos lleguen a su casa. No importa. Si ellos me llaman a mi a cualquier hora, ellos saben que dondequiera que ellos estén, yo llego. Para mi, los muchachos es lo más importante. Una de las cosas más importantes. Yo soy un facilitador para ellos. Donde ellos me necesiten yo voy a estar. Yo puedo tener mil defectos, pero en eso no. Yo soy real”. 

Miguel

Llegó en el 1995 al negocio familiar del cual se levantó el liderazgo de GENCO. Comenzó como mecánico a tiempo parcial trabajando con tractores hasta convertirse en uno de nuestros primeros empleados. Desarrolló sus destrezas para administrar personal con las puertas que se fueron abriendo. Pero su disposición para trabajar duro se convirtió en escuela para hoy ser una pieza clave en el éxito de GENCO. Esto, sin perder la esencia y recordar su pasado. “Me considero igual” – refiriéndose a sus comienzos como empleado y su trayectoria hasta ser líder – “simplemente con unas experiencias de tantos años de la vida, pero la vida no me ha cambiado, yo creo que yo sigo siendo el mismo.”

Miguel aprendió algo bien importante en sus comienzos que dice intentar enseñarles siempre a sus muchachos – “Disciplina. Yo creo que la disciplina que he adquirido en todos los años”. Dice que quien le enseñó disciplina, y tuvo mucha paciencia con él, fue Abuelo Víctor, como le llaman muchos de cariño a quien fue su líder por muchos años. “No hay mejor hombre que me haya enseñado disciplina que él. Se despertaba temprano, hacíamos todo temprano… si no hay disciplina, no va a funcionar nada – y eso es lo mismo que le he inculcado a los muchachos”.

La familia y el trabajo

“Para mi, mi vida son mis hijos y mi familia, pero después de eso va mi trabajo. GENCO es mi vida. Mis hijos y mi familia nacieron aquí, y yo soy parte de GENCO… yo estoy en una familia… lo cuido como si fuera mío porque de aquí vive mi familia”. Hay muchísimas historias que contar que demuestran el compromiso de Miguel con GENCO y con su equipo de trabajo. Una historia reciente se da en los comienzos de la pandemia, cuando aún no era obligatorio utilizar mascarillas, pero en Puerto Rico comenzaba una gran escasez de equipo de protección personal. Ante la necesidad de ver protegidos a sus muchachos, Miguel encontró soluciones inmediatas. Con la planificación más estratégica posible, Miguel abría cada cajita de guantes y dividía pequeños paquetes para cada uno de sus empleados, asegurándose que ninguno perdía la oportunidad de estar protegido. De igual forma, su señora madre le sirvió de aliada, cosiendo mascarillas para todo su equipo, cuando aún las mascarillas de tela no estaban en tendencia. Fueron innovadores en momentos de necesidad. 

Miguel también recuerda sus momentos de necesidad. Momentos muy fuertes a nivel personal en los que él ha necesitado de su gente de GENCO, y ha encontrado ese apoyo. “Yo dejé todo y me fui a bregar con mi prioridad” – refiriéndose a un momento muy fuerte para él y los suyos –  “esa gente (su familia de GENCO) estuvieron conmigo desde el primer día. Fueron solidarios conmigo. Eso es algo que no se me va a olvidar nunca”. 

“GENCO es una compañía de palabra”, esto es algo que Miguel comenta que le diría a nuestro cliente “una compañía en la cual puede confiar en el personal que le va a brindar el servicio. Que no se va a arrepentir de habernos contratado porque somos una compañía de palabra. Es lo que yo he hecho por 26 años. Que sepan que lo que uno le ofrece sentado en una silla (en negociación) es lo que se va a dar”.

Orgullo, honor e integridad

“Uno tiene que tener orgullo de lo que hace y lo que ofrece… tiene que uno hacer todo lo que hay que hacer en ley. Eso es lo esencial… a la larga, la satisfacción tuya va a ser que el cliente compre tu manera de ser. Eso no lo puede perder uno. La palabra que uno dé, la empeñaste y uno tiene que dar cara”.

¿Qué le dirías a tus futuros empleados? “No tengo que decirle mucho… a mis mismos muchachos yo siempre le he dicho de donde yo vengo. Lo que yo era en un momento dado. Hay muchos muchachos con mucho material para ofrecer. Están en posiciones que quizás se está perdiendo un talento. Porque hay mucho talento nuevo. Pero si son disciplinados y esperan su momento, su momento va a llegar. Va a llegar porque la vida es así. No importa donde tu estés, cuando tu brillas, brillas. No hay manera que tu no brilles. Y GENCO da esa facilidad. Y en estos 26 años que yo llevo aquí, me he ocupado de eso. De siempre decirle eso, que todo el mundo tiene derecho a progresar. Que todo el mundo tiene derecho a ser mejor ser humano y el momento va a llegar. Yo creo que mejor ejemplo que yo, no lo va a haber. Yo soy una carta de que eso si se puede. Las oportunidades se dieron y yo las aproveché y estoy aquí”.
