He has been working with GENCO since October 2008 but has been in the same location for 19 years: US Customs & Border Patrol, Air Marine Branch in Aguadilla. “Good service, hard work and teamwork”, Julio Juan Villanueva Vélez believes that’s why he ended up achieving a good word from the client to have the opportunity to become part of GENCO. Julio currently supervises Facility Maintenance operations at that location.

“We do everything here…” Julio shares about his day. “Sometimes, when I come into the gate… the boss is already waiting for me – ‘look, Julio, we have to do this’, it happens sometimes, not every day! Sometimes I have a set schedule and I keep doing things. We do everything here. “

Julio and his employees work every day handling specialized equipment, parts and products for their location. “I worked 7 years as a handyman, and that served as a step to get here … I brought knowledge as such, but here I’ve gotten more skills.” Although he already brought the experience of everything he does daily, his experience of managing employees began at GENCO. “Those who were here already knew what I was like, and they decided that I was a good fit to be in charge of the boys.” He says it was a decision that he didn’t have to think much, and he felt comfortable accepting it quickly.

There’s a lot that moves Julio daily to do his work. He understands the value he has especially in times of emergency. “In stormy weather all the barricades have to be guarded … we help them… out here you can’t leave anything.”

Difficult moments

Julio remembers a lot about the unique experience of Hurricane María. He worked tirelessly. “I came in with my stepson to see how everything was around… and when they saw me!” – Yes, that’s right! They asked him for help. Julio was a great supporter during Hurricane Maria, which passed through Puerto Rico in September 2017. He came to his work location every weekend to start the generators and worked full time during the week. All while he was going through one of the worst moments of his life. “We got power at home after three months… I passed hell with that. After that, in April, my wife died. She was already in treatment. We struggled … she had to be tied to an oxygen tank.” Julio says that, at that time, both his GENCO people and our client were of great help to him. He had access to power plants, water and was able to call his family outside of Puerto Rico when the entire island had no power. “I got through it and got over it. But Maria destroyed a lot.”

“Roman worked hard here.” Julio speaks about Román Vélez, who is today our Executive Vice President and who at that time was our client. “If Román hadn’t been here! Wow! He quickly arrived. Two or three days later (he) was already here (in Aguadilla). Many of the agents slept here. Many stayed here! We cooked here so anyone had to go out, because there was no place to eat around. We got together and purchased groceries. It was good … it was sad, a lot of loss. Román knows what happened here during María.” Julio understands that today he is much more prepared to receive a similar storm given this experience and what he learned from it. The experience left a special appreciation for his team and a special admiration for Román Vélez as leader. “Román was here, and he already knew what was done here. Even when he was not yet with GENCO, since before, he has always worked together with us. He is someone good. “

He also mentions that Miguel Sosa, his direct Supervisor, was someone very helpful in his personal process during the loss of his wife. He is grateful for it.

Do you like your job?

“Yes! I love it!” – He says immediately with excitement. “It’s what I like to do. Not every day is the same. You do not get bored. You talk to everyone. I thank GENCO for that. “

Any special experience that you would always remember from your role at GENCO?

“The get together that we have going on right now… is not everywhere that you get to do something like this… we share as a family. That’s the best thing that happens here. ” Julio refers to a get together that often takes place in his work location, in which the GENCO team, our client, area workers and key personnel of the operation come together to enjoy lunch. For him, that will always be one of the best memories of his time at work. “All of us … we are a family!“

What would you tell a prospective customer about GENCO?

“That as a company – it’s one of the best companies that has ever been here.” Among what Julio thinks makes GENCO special is “good work. You are going to put a frame in the wall, because it is just a frame, that frame must be leveled. Correct. As you work well… you recommend yourself for your work. “

On our motto, Julio reflects: “It is an honor for me to be working with them” – referring to our client – “integrity is what they have instilled in me since I was young, and I am proud to do what I like to do, and I do it well. “

Somos GENCO: Julio Villanueva, Operaciones

Trabaja con GENCO desde octubre del 2008, pero lleva 19 años en la misma localidad: US Customs & Border Patrol, Air Marine Branch en Aguadilla. “El buen servicio, buen trabajo y compañerismo”, a eso le atribuye Julio Juan Villanueva Velez el lograr una buena recomendación del cliente para comenzar a ser parte de GENCO. Julio actualmente supervisa las operaciones de Mantenimiento a Facilidades en esa localidad.

“Aquí se hace de todo…” cuenta Julio sobre su día. “A veces al entrar al portón… ya el jefe me está esperando – ‘mira Julio hay que hacer esto’, ¡pasa a veces, no todos los días! A veces tengo un ‘schedule’ y voy haciendo las cosas. Se hace de todito aquí.”

Julio y sus empleados trabajan a diario manejando equipo, piezas y productos especializados para su localidad. “Yo trabajé 7 años como handyman, y eso me sirvió de trampolín aquí… Yo traía conocimiento como tal, pero aquí uno (obtiene) más destrezas.” Aunque ya traía la experiencia del trabajo diario, la experiencia de manejar empleados la comenzó en GENCO. “Los que estaban aquí ya sabían como era yo, y decidieron ponerme a cargo de los muchachos.” Cuenta que fue una decisión que no tuvo que pensar mucho y se sintió cómodo en aceptar rápido. 

Hay muchas partes que a Julio lo mueve a diario en su trabajo. Él entiende el valor que tiene y máxime en momentos de emergencia. “En tiempo de tormenta todas las barricadas hay que guardarlas… se le ayuda a ellos… aquí afuera no se puede dejar nada.” 

Momentos difíciles

Julio recuerda mucho sobre la experiencia única del paso del Huracán María. Trabajó de manera incansable. “Vine con mi hijastro para ver como estaba por ahí… ¡y cuando me vieron!”– ¡Correcto! Le pidieron ayuda. Julio fue un apoyo grande durante el Huracán María que pasó por Puerto Rico en septiembre del 2017. Él pasaba por su localidad de trabajo cada fin de semana para llenar las plantas eléctricas y trabajaba tiempo completo durante la semana. Todo mientras pasaba uno de los peores momentos de su vida. “A mi me llegó la luz en casa a los tres meses… yo pasé las de Caín con eso. Después de eso en abril se murió mi esposa. Ya venía en tratamiento. Aquí bregaron… (ella) tenía que estar con oxígeno.” Julio cuenta que, en ese tiempo, tanto su gente de GENCO como nuestro cliente fueron de gran ayuda para él. Tuvo acceso a plantas eléctricas, agua y pudo hacer llamadas a su familia fuera de Puerto Rico en momentos en el que la isla entera estaba incomunicada. “Lo pasé y lo superé. Pero eso de María destruyó muchas cosas.”

“Román bregó aquí.” Habla Julio de Román Vélez, quien hoy es nuestro Vicepresidente Ejecutivo y para ese momento era nuestro cliente. “¡Si Román no hubiera estado! Wow. Él rápido llegó. A los dos días o tres ya (él) estaba (en Aguadilla). Mucha gente dormía aquí de los agentes. Se quedaron muchos aquí. Cocinábamos aquí para no salir, porque no había nada. Nos unimos y se hacía una compra. Se pasó bien… era triste, mucha pérdida. Román sabe lo que se pasó aquí en María.” Julio entiende que hoy día está más preparado para recibir una tormenta similar dado a esta experiencia y lo que aprendió de ella. Esto le dejó un agradecimiento especial a su equipo de trabajo y una admiración especial por Román Vélez como líder. “Román estaba aquí y ya sabía lo que se hacía aquí. Aún él no estando con GENCO, desde antes, siempre trabajaba junto con nosotros. Es bueno.” 

También menciona que Miguel Sosa, su Supervisor directo, fue alguien de mucha ayuda en su proceso personal por la pérdida de su esposa. Y él así lo agradece. 

¿Te gusta tu trabajo?

“¡Sí! ¡Me encanta!” – dice de inmediato con emoción. “Es lo que a mi me gusta hacer. No todos los días es lo mismo. No te aburres. Hablas con todo el mundo. Le doy gracias a GENCO por eso.”

¿Alguna experiencia especial que siempre recordarías de tu rol en GENCO?

“El compartir que hacemos ahora mismo… no se comparte en ningún lado así… se comparte con ellos como una familia. Eso es lo mejor que pasa aquí.” Julio se refiere a un compartir que se da a menudo en su localidad, en el que se junta el equipo de GENCO, clientes, trabajadores del área y personal clave de la operación, a disfrutar de un almuerzo juntos. Para él, eso siempre será uno de los mejores recuerdos de su trabajo. “Todos nosotros… ¡eso es una familia lo que hay!”

¿Qué le dirías a un prospecto cliente sobre GENCO?

“Que como compañía – es una de las mejores compañías que ha pasado por aquí.” Dentro de lo que Julio piensa que a GENCO lo hace especial es “el buen trabajo. Tu vas a poner un cuadro, porque sea un cuadro, ese cuadro tiene que estar a nivel. Derechito. Como manda… tu te recomiendas por tu trabajo.” 

Sobre nuestro lema, Julio reflexiona: “es un honor para mi es estar con ellos” – refiriéndose a nuestro cliente – “trabajando, integridad es lo que me han inculcado a mi desde pequeño y es un orgullo para mi hacer lo que me gusta hacer y hacerlo bien.”

¿Qué le dices a alguien que quiere ser parte de GENCO?

“Primero, tienes que ser buen trabajador, no faltar mucho, y tratar a todos como a uno mismo. Todos somos iguales.”
